Hundreds of volunteers and school children made traditional slap bricks again in Arney with the help of master brick maker Tony Mugridge. The bricks were made throughout the summer of 2014 and then fired in kilns built in the brick field from the drying bricks. For centuries Arney bricks were synonymous with house building in Ennniskillen. From at least the 18th Century bricks were transported in flat bottomed boats [cots] down the Arney river and Lough Erne to the County town. The process was all but forgotten as the last kiln was fired in 1939/40. This film, along with the main documentary film, shows how this centuries old process was carried out. A more detailed report of brick making will be posted soon. .
